Here’s a list of just some of the fun things to do and see on these trips:

Glaciers & Icebergs

The ice fields and glaciers of Southeast Alaska are some of the last remnants of once vast ice sheets. Cruise “back in time” through an iceberg strewn fjord, and stand in awe of an enormous calving glacier.

Salmon Streams

Salmon are a vital component of life in the Tongass rainforest ecosystem, and their annual return to their natal streams is a much anticipated event! Take a hike to a salmon stream or visit a hatchery, and watch for bears drawn to the bounty.

Deep Sea Fishing

Drop a line with our professional quality fishing rods & reels, and bring in a halibut or salmon. Your catch of the day can be filleted and prepared by our chef, for an unmatched culinary delight.

Whales Watching

The Frederick Sound area encompasses some of the best humpback whale watching in the world. At times, you’ll literally be surrounded! Observe fascinating behaviors and listen in on humpback communications.

Marine Mammal Watching

It’s not just humpbacks that make these waters special! Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bow riding Dall’s porpoise, and even killer whales are frequently observed from the Northern Song.

Photography

A cruise aboard the Northern Song provides endless opportunities for photography. Whether your interest lies in capturing sweeping landscapes or magnificent wildlife, we want to help you get the shots you’re dreaming of!

Sea kayaking

Our safe, comfortable and stable kayaks are a wonderful platform for exploring isolated bays and rugged coastlines, even for those with little to no prior experience.

Rain Forest Hiking

Temperate rain forest, with its towering old growth trees and emerald expanses of moss, makes for fascinating exploring. Join us on a hike to a waterfall, or along meandering trails, and experience this ancient ecosystem firsthand.

Beach Combing

The beaches of this island archipelago also provide excellent opportunities for exploring. Stretch your legs on a secluded stretch of sand, or search for tide pool creatures at low tide.

Flightseeing

Get an unparalleled eagle’s eye view of the vast ice fields stretching east to the Canadian border, and circle the storied peak of Devil’s Thumb. Weather permitting, we can arrange to have you picked up by floatplane right from the Northern Song!

Ancient & Recent Culture

Southeast Alaska has a vivid cultural past. Native American (Tlingit and Haida) tribes and European settlers have both left their indelible marks on the area, and evidence of these cultures makes for intriguing study.

Shrimping

Set out the shrimp traps on the way into a secluded harbor for the night and haul up the catch in the morning. Prepared simply and elegantly by our chef, Alaska’s large and tender spot shrimp are the best of the best!

Crabbing

Toss out the crab traps in one of our many productive locations, and haul in a bounty of delectable Dungeness crab. All-you-can eat crab dinners simply do not come any fresher or more delicious!

Clam Digging

Visit the shore at low tide, and dig a bucket of succulent surf clams. A favorite of guests and a real treat tossed in butter and garlic!

Our 4th trip to Alaska and this was the icing on the cake! It was a week of “best evers”—best claming—best crabbing—the best shrimping—best sea lion activity—right up to the boat—marvelous whale activity—fabulous orca pods…

IMG_2974You have given us a week that truly has been filled with experiences and memories that will last for a lifetime. We feel just so fortunate to have been introduced to SE Alaska by you. This is a most beautiful part of the world-The majesty and antiquity of the landscape-weathered over areas by water, ice and wind; the vigor of its nature, epitomized by the forest giants and the black bears; The free spirit of the water and all the creatures that call it home; and the petroglyphs- Those messages left for us by other humankind, who no doubt marveled at the wonders of this natural world, just as we do today.
