Boat Layout

The 60-foot expedition yacht "Alaska Adventurer's" custom design is based on an Alaska commercial style hull that has been time proven in Alaska commercial fisheries. Safe, functional, and very comfortable, it has four private guest staterooms with three bathrooms and two hot-water showers. It has a spacious salon, protected decks and excellent viewing areas. There are two fifteen-foot skiffs that provide access to shore and increased mobility. The four staterooms are outfitted as follows:

THE SALON is the hub of all activities. Located on the main deck, its soft settee cushions, carpeted floor, large table and picture windows makes this a warm, cozy place for dining, a conference or quiet time. It has a large TV, VCR, CD and Cassette decks with remote controls and jacks for replaying your day's camcorder efforts. Libraries provide a selection of tapes and discs, plus books on natural history, and recreational reading, and a large area wall map.

PILOT HOUSE: Its generous size, and settee make it a very popular spot for outside viewing, chatting, and observing the hi-tech electronic operating instruments in action. The area chart is always on the chart table and watching the GPS/plotter graphically track the ship's course to an accuracy of some 30' (anywhere in the world) is plain awesome!

THE FLY-BRIDGE is above the pilot house and the "top-most" observation deck. The 360-degree view is great whether your focus is on the horizon or looking into a bubble-net circle of feeding humpback whales. There is ample seating and space for cameras, etc. as well as a fold-back soft top allowing rainy-day protection and sunny-day exposure.

THE AFT DECK is 80% covered and a great place for changing in or out of outdoor clothing, boots, for fishing and even viewing. It features the fish cleaning and packaging console, live tanks for bait, hydraulic lifter for deep shrimp fishing, and a gate for Whaler access at the stern makes this area second in popularity to the salon. A control station allows the vessel to be operated from the aft deck.

THE SIDE DECKS are also covered and the safety rails make these areas good for watching or fishing. Side gates also allow alternate access to the Whalers.

THE FORE-DECK, or bow deck, is where the action is during whale watching. You can watch and film porpoises less than 10' below you as they swim within inches of the boat's bow. The hydrophones are lowered from this deck so you can listen as well as watch whale and porpoise activities.

THE BOAT DECK holds the two Whalers, a large outboard fuel storage tank and safety equipment. It is primarily the utility/work deck It has other limited uses, but the other areas described are better.

THE LAZARET lazaret is the "basement". It is directly beneath the aft deck and has two access doors. It is cool and dry and excellent for storing luggage and miscellaneous items not needed during the trip as well as boots and outdoor clothing.

ANTI-ROLL DEVICES are both fixed and movable and the boat has both. First, consider that anything that is supported on a moving base will only be as stable as the base it's on. Smaller boats respond to much smaller sea conditions than giant cruise ships, but there is a point when all floating objects will respond to the actions of the sea. This has been a challenge for mariners forever and there are some very successful systems to eliminate and minimize a boats roll today. Gyro stabilizers are activated hydraulically when the boat is moving and the results are unbelievable. A planing device suspended from an outrigger-type pole works whether the boat is moving or stationary. You'll enjoy the benefits of both on the Alaska Adventurer.

ODDS AND ENDS could be the longest list. They all add up to providing you with the most safe and functional boat of its kind. Thick molded decks and water tight bulkheads maximize soundproofing and make the boat virtually unsinkable. A 200 gal/day water-maker supplements a 1000 gal fresh water storage tank and 3 separate water heaters assure ample hot water just like at home! The music/PA system lets you enjoy your favorite music outside as well as inside with the knowledge that a whale sighting will be heard wherever you may be on the vessel. The lifting equipment was selected from the commercial rather than yacht design. It means fast dependable anchoring, Whaler lifting and the ability to set and pull several shrimp or crab traps from great depths with no effort! The catch is measured by the bucket, not the individual piece. A catch translates into the freshest feast ever and is limited only by your tummy's capacity rather than by how many ways a shrimp or crab can be divided. The large main freezer and refrigerator were custom built to provide fast freezing of a catch, and to operate more efficiently. The hull and superstructure are insulated and most of the windows are thermopane. Two generators provide electricity just like at home. Both 110v cabin heaters and a circulating hot water heating system keep the boat warm and comfortable with no damp corners regardless of the outside weather. In short, the boat was custom designed for what it does and it does it very well. Safety, comfort, function, and your pleasure are the basics continually adhered to.
