Wrangell St Elias National Park
Kennicott Lodge - Wrangell St Elias National Park

Exciting adventure excursion for the family. Wild river rafting in old gold mining area takes visitors back to the prospecting days of Alaska’s past. Overnight stopover in Anchorage.

Tuesday and  Thursday departures

DAY 1
  • Depart Petersburg via Alaska Airlines overnight Anchorage
DAY 2
  • Depart 815am for  2hour  flight via Piper twin engine flight to McCarthy. McCarthy is a historic landmark formerly a copper mining town with 600 residents in the early 1900’s.

  • Explore the remnants of the old town, mines and buildings while here on your visit on your guided tour.

  • Overnight Kennicott Glacier Lodge
DAY 3
  • Your raft  trip begins  in the morning at the base of the Root and Kennicot glacial moraine, as the Kennicott river begins its steep descent away from these towering ice fields. Views from the launch point are of the glistening glaciers and staggering mountains.

  • The first few miles are laced with class II and III rapids that provide enjoyment and a moderate challenge. You  stop below the rapids and marvel at the panorama that includes views of the Wrangell and Chugach mountain ranges as they jut skyward.

  • You then reach the confluence of the Nizina river, in a broad open plain where you may spot bear, eagle, and even the occasional wolf or moose. After a satisfying Alaska-style lunch you head off onto the Nizina and enter the impressively narrow Nizina canyon. Here towering walls form tight corners and create powerful currents that spin and twist their way down river. In this stretch you will  feel the quiet isolation of Wrangell St. Elias. We may also spot wildlife here, including falcons that in years past have nested in the cliffs. When the Nizina reaches the mighty Chitina river you will  pull ashore and salute an amazing float trip.

  • You gather on a riverside gravel bar and meet an Alaska bush pilot for a spectacular 30-minute flightseeing trip up to and around the glaciers from where the trip  started. The trip ends with a touchdown on the dirt airstrip in McCarthy.
DAY 4
  • Fly out 1100am today and arrive in Anchorage at 2pm. Overnight Anchorage
DAY 5
  • Return via Alaska to Petersburg or other destination (subject to a small price differential)
