Guided Focus on Whales/Photography w/ Lisa StrongAufhauser
Trip A126: 8 days / 7 nights on boat, July 16th - 22nd, 2006

Every spring the humpback whales return from Hawaii to the bountiful waters of SE Alaska's Inside Passage because of the abundant food. Do they notice the towering snow-capped mountains? The cerulean blue tidewater glaciers? The freshwater falls splashing through temperate rainforests? The thickets of wildflowers both showy and delicate? Bears browsing through beach grass, salmon and berries? Hmm. Probably not, but you will if you love to experience and photograph untamed and grand nature. When you catch a glimpse of those humpbacks, they will leave you awestruck.

This adventure takes you through Frederick Sound and along Chatham Straight, among spectacular islands and inlets, up fjord-like narrows. We'll look for feeding humpback whales, sea lions, orcas, Dall's porpoises, and harbor seals by sea; bears, eagles, shore birds, wildflowers, forests, glaciers and ice caves by land.

Your captain has long experience piloting through the waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. Your guide, Lisa Strong Aufhauser, is an experienced naturalist/photographer with many years guiding trips and assisting people with the aesthetics of photography, from composition and the quality of light, to the nitty gritty of exposures, shutter speeds, and apertures. We will be shooting both on the boat and on the shore and whether you are a digital or film photographer, each setting will provide their photographic challenges and rewards. For those of you shooting with a digital camera, we will have the ability to review your work during the trip - extremely helpful in the learning process, and lots of fun for everyone reviewing an eventful day. Videographers are also warmly welcomed.

If you've been wanting to hone your video skills, or just learn the basics of how to use your video camera, here's your chance. A long-time still photographer, Lisa now primarily shoots video and makes movies. She'll help you improve your video shooting, get you considering audio, and thinking about the shots that go together to tell a story. The excitement of capturing wildlife, is often all about the motion and sound.

Join us for this spectacular Alaska whales and Inside Passage explorer excursion with an intimate small group limited to a maximum of 8 participants. Shine your lens at some of the best Alaska has to offer!

This 7 day / 6 night photo journey departs Petersburg July 16th aboard the expedition yacht Alaska Adventurer. About half of our time will be spent seeking out, watching and photographing humpback whales. There's just nothing like it. The boat gives us a fabulous platform and point of view for photographing marine mammals, sea birds, and mountain vistas. Shooting from a boat is a skill you'll learn. We'll also spend on-shore time with our cameras and tripods to photograph landscapes grand as a glacial valley and intimate as a row of mussels clamped shut at low tide. And, you know that great light that happens around sunset? Some call it golden hour. At lower latitudes, it doesn't last that long. In Alaska, it lasts longer. Look through a viewfinder, a pair of binoculars, or with your naked eyes. You'll get a close-up view of a wilderness world you won't forget.
