Southeast Alaska

Southeast Alaska - Escape to the Wild!

The part of Alaska commonly referred to as ‘Southeast' Alaska is the ‘panhandle' portion of the state made up of the Alexander Archipelago of islands and a strip of mainland bordering Canada's British Columbia and Yukon Territories. Nearly all of the nearly 40,000 square mile area of southeast Alaska which is larger than the state of Indiana, is comprised of the Tongass National Forest and is not only the largest U.S. National Forest, but a major portion of the world's largest remaining temperate rain forest.

Southeast Alaska is one of the most remote areas of the U.S. and is accessible only by air or boat. As a result of its remote location and difficulty of access, the area has a sparse human population of about 70,000 people located in a handful of scattered towns, villages and very small communities. This is a rare place where the population ratio of people to bears is only approximately 2 to 1!
