PETERSBURG, Alaska—Play a role in preserving history while enjoying a cruise through the awesome South Alaska passage in a one-of-a kind, five-day Kosciusko Island Rock Art Study project sponsored by Alaska Sea Adventures. This authentic archaeological expedition combines a love for adventures with a genuine concern for history by providing educational opportunities, a unique chance to preserve and protect two rock art sites on the island, breathtaking scenery, captivating wildlife, gourmet dining, and incredible personal service.
Participants in this historic U.S. Forest Service Heritage Expedition, the first ever conducted in Alaska, will be led and taught by archaeological experts, U.S. Forest Service professionals, and Sealaska Heritage Institute representatives. Under the supervision of project specialists, cruise-goers will learn the techniques of responsible rock art study and actively document the spectacular examples of Native Alaskan rock carving found at two sites on Kosciusko Island. The two sites are remarkably different in style, subject matter, and degree of preservation, and a major goal of the excursion will be to compare the two sites through the use of descriptive and ethnographic data to interpret the sources of variation.
In addition, those involved will be involved in a coastal archaeological study, spending at least one day gathering pertinent survey information under the guidance of a Forest Service archaeologist. If time allows, participants will also visit On Your Knees Cave, where human remains and a campsite dating more than 9,000 years old have been identified.
Evening programs will be offered aboard the Alaska Adventurer, a 60-foot, four-cabin expedition yacht. Scheduled topics include discussions of rock art in the North Pacific Region, archaeological and paleontological research in the area, and area wildlife. Group members will undoubtedly catch glimpses of this well-known wildlife, including whales, seals, sea lions, sea and land otters, black bears, ravens, eagles, and a variety of sea birds, throughout the eight-day excursion. Evening paddle and beachcombing expeditions will also available.
