Sitka Herring Spawn Extravaganza 2012
Spring 2012 has arrived to SE Alaska! Alaska Sea Adventures inaugural Sitka herring spawn trip was an incredible adventure that featured many fascinating elements. The ‘Silver Wave’ of Pacific herring made it’s annual anticipated arrival to scenic Sitka Sound during the first week of March in gorgeous weather. With Mt. Fuji like appearance, beautiful Sitka’s landmark dormant volcano Mt. Edgecombe created a magnificent backdrop for participants of this cruise aboard the yacht Northern Song to shoot amazing scenes of whales, hundreds of Bald eagles, Steller sea lions, seals, gulls and seabirds in pursuit of the rewarding bounty of newly arrived herring.
Trip participants also enjoyed observing the infamous Sitka sac-roe commercial fishery and local Tlingit native process of placing hemlock tree branches in the sea to harvest herring eggs. This was an adventure I am very anxiously looking forward to repeating next spring! |
